Several clouds, some shadows, and the river, half asleep, like a blue python. The world looks serene and safe up here, but few birds manage to survive the winds. “Our parents and their parents all disappeared,” they sing. “Remember their adagios that inspired Vivaldi and Mozart? All under sand. The spires of cathedral towers where we used to roost and sing? Buried. Khafre’s pyramid is under there somewhere, and Beijing, and the green forests of the Iroquois, and vineyards in what used to be the foothills of the Pyrenees. Palaces that once had views of the sea have sunk beneath it. Like the winds above the clouds, the Past has teeth. So does what is yet to come.”

Daisy The Wonder Dog – oil/canvas – 12 x 12 inches.

Even half-soaked, she weighs no more than 3½ kilos, and it takes a stretch of imagination to reflect on her origins in a distant past more than 20,000 years ago. She wades joyfully into a little pool in our back yard and then, thrilled to see us, runs to greet us when we come home from work in the evening. The sight of this soggy, happy descendant of wolves makes the heart swell.

Mystic Fire

For the past few weeks waves of fire have roared and raged across California, leaving blackened earth and desperation behind. Every day the red sun simmers in an amber haze; every other day ashes sift down on us like showers of grey snowflakes. It’s not possible to ignore the frightening power of wildfires, but in this painting I wanted to show a different kind of fire –no less frightening — a mystical fire. Many people, especially the literal-minded, are unaware that such fire exists. But it sometimes comes to visit those whose ears and eyes are open . We are the trees. It burns all of us differently, I imagine. To me it is cold, like an icicle, like a windy night in January. It’s a fire of grief and joy, and it burns like a white sun.
