A few years ago I unexpectedly lost contact with a friend. She reappeared just as unexpectedly only a few days ago. In addition to playing the harp, camping with her dogs and riding motorcycles, she is also learning to fly airplanes. I painted this image of the world above the clouds years before she was born, but I post it today in gratitude for the renewal of a friendship.

On a Spring afternoon in San Francisco not too many years ago, the artist caught a N Judah streetcar on Market St. and rode it, sketchbook in hand, out to the ocean. As he walked back into the city to his studio through Golden Gate Park he noticed a puddle of water and saw in it a meeting of air, water, earth and sun. Hence the title of the painting.

Ask any artist: painting what you can see – flowers, sidewalks, sunsets, people – isn’t it a difficult task? So how do you paint something you can’t see, like a thought, a feeling, a mood? You sense the presence of something, but you can’t quite put the feeling into words, let alone into paint. For example: what is happening in this room?
