My Friend, Lee

My friend, Lee – pencil/paper – 3 x 4 inchesOne of the things I love about my friends is that they know more than I do about more things than I even know about. This 5-minute sketch shows only the merest hint of a guy who knows about a lot of things: trucks, almond farming, making things out of wood, Norwegians, dentistry, San Francisco in the 1960’s and 70’s, donkeys, the irrigation of crops, and building a wood-fired pizza oven from scratch. Plus he’s funny. Someday, perhaps he’ll hold still for longer than 5 minutes.

The Lives of Women

When I was a student in college, the walls of my youthful worldview began to collapse as I discovered the films of Ingmar Bergman, François Truffaut, Federico Fellini and other directors. My friends and I loved discussing The Seventh Seal, The 400 Blows and La Strada. But one night, after a date at the movies, my girlfriend accused me of taking films– especially “foreign” films– too seriously. The accusation hurt my feelings because I thought she meant there was something wrong with me. She made it clear: that was exactly what she meant.

It was true that when I first saw Disney’s Pinocchio as a little boy, I was so terrified when the whale swallowed the puppet/boy that I turned my back to the screen. I can tell you what the rest of the audience in the theatre looked like as they watched the film, but I refused to look at it. So my girlfriend was right; I certainly had taken Pinocchio much too seriously. But why, I wondered? What was wrong with me?  As a young man I knew that there were several things wrong with me, but only later did it occur to me that taking films seriously wasn’t one of them. It was her problem, not mine: she didn’t take films seriously enough. So we broke up.

Before I Wake

Before I Wake – Watercolor – 10 x 14 inchesThe title of the painting comes from a child’s bedtime prayer: “Now I lay me down to sleep.
I pray the Lord my soul to keep.
If I should die before I wake,
I pray to God my soul to take.”

This watercolor sketch was one of the first of many attempts to paint how things change. In this sketch there is the change from interior to exterior— from the confines of the room out onto the spaces of the road and into the landscape and mountains in the distance. The little girl runs between one reality into another.

Years later I’m still trying to paint metaphors for change.
Years later, the little girl tells me she is still running.
