Edge of the Wood

$15.00$1,900.00

I wanted to create a space that was simultaneously inside and outside with no clear border in between. The painting began with a view of the Chicago river with Wacker Drive on the left side and the Chicago skyline in the middle, merging on the right side into the room of an abandoned hotel in San Francisco. There seem to be wars everywhere, so I drained the river, set fire to a skyscraper and a few cars, and added some thugs with guns. In the center of this chaos are a man and a woman, She understands what is going on. He doesn’t. (This image is also available as a digital print – 15 x 22 in.)

After many years of painting landscapes and city scenes, curiosity drew me towards the vivid images of my dreams. I was aware of the works of Joan Miró, Max Ernst, Dalí and Paul Delveaux, but only gradually realized that the images that arose in my own sleep were just as worthy of being painted as the scenes I observed during my waking hours. They are formidable challenges to paint, and if I were confined to painting either the waking or sleeping aspects of life, I would paint dreams.
