The title of the painting comes from a child’s bedtime prayer: “Now I lay me down to sleep.
I pray the Lord my soul to keep.
If I should die before I wake,
I pray to God my soul to take.” This watercolor sketch was one of the first of many attempts to paint how things change. In this sketch there is the change from interior to exterior— from the confines of the room out onto the spaces of the road and into the landscape and mountains in the distance. The little girl runs between one reality into another.
Years later I’m still trying to paint metaphors for change.
Years later, the little girl tells me she is still running.
